Herbs and Health: Medicinal and culinary use of Lemongrass (Koriko Oba)

Lemongrass also known as Cymbopogon citratus is a common grass in tropical regions in Africa znd Southeastern Asia. The plant has both medicinal and culinary value. The stem is usually used for medicinal herb while the dried leaves can be brewed into a tea, either alone or as a flavoring in other teas.

Medicinal Use

  • Lemongrass has some important phytochemicals such as citral (about 85%), myrcene, citronellal, citronellol, and geraniol. The essential oil citral is used in treating Leishmania amazonensis.
  • Lemongrass leaves are used as stimulant, sudorific, antiperiodic, and anticatarrhal, while
  • The essential oil is used as carminative, depressant, analgesic, antipyretic, antibacterial, and antifungal agent.
  • The mixture of lemon grass oil with virgin coconut oil is used in aromatherapy.

Culinary Use

Dried lemongrass leaf has a flavor reminiscent of lemon juice but with a mild sweetness without significant sourness or tartness.
