Herbs and Health: Medicinal and Culinary Use of Tumeric (Ata-ile pupa)

Turmeric, a plant in the ginger family. Its rhizome (underground stem) is used as a culinary spice and traditional medicine.  It is commonly used in controlling many disease conditions including-

  • digestive disorders
  • respiratory infections,
  • allergies
  • liver disease and
  • depression.

This powerful spice contains an active ingredient called Curcumin which also gives it its yellow color. Curcumin is a rich nero-protective agent, protects the liver for efficient detoxification process, and a valuable heart protective agent.

Tumeric is an anti-pyretic and when mixed with other plants such as black peppercorn seeds (a NSAID), flavored with lemon can be a great source of pain relief and fever.  The herbal mixture can be made using the process of the concoction.  Turmeric is very popular in dietary supplement for cardiovascular health.
