Treatment
Lifestyle changes, such as avoiding trigger foods, losing weight, eating smaller meals, and avoiding lying down after eating
Over-the-counter antacids, such as Tums or Rolaids, which neutralize stomach acid
Over-the-counter H2 blockers, such as Pepcid or Zantac, which reduce the amount of acid your stomach produces
Over-the-counter proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), such as Prilosec or Nexium, which block acid production and heal the esophagus
Prescription medications, such as stronger PPIs or prokinetic agents, which help the stomach empty faster
Surgery, in rare cases where other treatments are not effective or if there is damage to the esophagus.
