Health Issues:Dystonia

Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder that causes involuntary, sustained, or repetitive muscle contractions, leading to twisting, abnormal postures, and repetitive movements. Symptoms can include neck twisting, eye blinking, voice problems (spasmodic dysphonia), tremors, eyelid spasms (blepharospasm), and task-specific difficulties like writer’s or musician’s cramp. Symptoms may worsen with stress, fatigue, or activity. Dystonia can be primary (genetic or unknown cause) or secondary (resulting from another condition like Parkinson’s, stroke, or medications). It may affect one body part (focal), multiple parts (segmental), or the whole body (generalized). Diagnosis is made through a clinical evaluation by a neurologist. Treatments focus on managing symptoms and include botulinum toxin (Botox) injections, medications (anticholinergics or muscle relaxants), deep brain stimulation (DBS) for severe cases, and physical therapy to improve movement and posture.
