Itching is an irritating sensation that makes you want to scratch your skin and may be accompanied by a rash or hives. Common causes include allergies, skin conditions (like eczema or dry skin), irritants, parasites, pregnancy, certain diseases (liver, kidney, thyroid, nervous system), and some cancers or treatments. Most itching is not serious and can be relieved with cold compresses, moisturizing, lukewarm baths, over-the-counter creams or antihistamines, and avoiding scratching or irritants. If itching is severe, persistent, or unexplained, a healthcare provider should be consulted, as treating any underlying condition may help.
