
Coral bush also known as Jatropha multituda, is a fast growing shrub that reaches about 1.5 to 3 meters in height. It is characterized by its deeply lobed hand shaped leaves and clusters of bright red or orange flowers. The plant has soft green stems that become woody over time and produces a milky, toxic latex. It also bears small green capsules that split open to release black seeds.
Coral bush is commonly found In tropical rain forest of Africa such as in Nigeria west Africa,south America And Asia . It is particularly common in Yoruba speaking areas of Nigeria where it is locally known as lapalapa pupa. The plant is often grown around homes, gardens, and farms for its attractive appearance and traditional medicinal uses.
Medicinal uses
Coral bush is valued in traditional medicine for its bioactive compounds which offer antiseptic, anti inflammatory, antimicrobial, and purgative properties. The latex is used to treat wounds and skin infections while the leaves are applied to relieve fever, inflammation and joint pain. Its roots and bark serve as natural remedies for digestive issues such as constipation.
However, the plant is toxic and should be used with caution, as ingestion or improper handling of its seeds or latex can cause harmful effects like vomiting, diarrhea, and skin irritation.
